Project Description

1. Project Overview & Goal

We are looking for an experienced WordPress developer to design and build a modern, high-performance, and mobile-responsive website dedicated to sports news and live updates. The site must be highly scalable to handle traffic spikes during major events and be easily manageable by our editorial team via the WordPress CMS.

Goal: To launch a professional, user-friendly sports news platform that drives high user engagement and is optimized for search engines (SEO).

2. Key Website Features & Functionality

The successful freelancer will be responsible for implementing the following features:

A. Core Content & Performance

  • Mobile-First Responsive Design: The site must display flawlessly on all devices (desktop, tablet, mobile), adhering to modern mobile-first design standards for speed and usability.

  • High-Performance & Speed: Optimization for fast loading times (aim for a high score on Google PageSpeed Insights) using caching, image optimization (lazy loading, WebP), and clean code.

  • Advanced News Structure:

    • Custom post types for different content formats (e.g., standard news articles, opinion pieces, photo galleries, video highlights).

    • Robust category and tag system (e.g., by Sport, Team, League, Player).

  • Featured Content & Hero Section: A dynamic homepage hero area to prominently display the most critical breaking news and top stories.

B. Sports-Specific Features (Must-Haves)

  • Live Score Integration: Implement a reliable third-party API (e.g., SportsPress or a specific league API, to be discussed) to display real-time scores and results for selected games/leagues.

    • Deliverable: A configurable widget/section for displaying live scores on the homepage and dedicated league pages.

  • Match Schedules & Results: Dedicated sections for upcoming fixtures and past results, filterable by date, sport, and team.

  • Player/Team Profiles: Custom post types or plugin integration to create detailed, structured profiles for players and teams, including biographies, stats, and a link to related news articles.

  • Stat/Table Display: Ability to embed or display league tables, standings, and detailed player statistics clearly and responsively.

C. User Experience & Engagement

  • User-Friendly Navigation: Clear primary, secondary, and footer menus with intuitive mega-menu functionality for sports/league sections.

  • Embedded Multimedia: Seamless integration for embedding videos from YouTube/Vimeo and creating fast-loading image galleries.

  • Social Media Integration: Easy sharing buttons on all articles and an embedded, dynamic social media feed (e.g., Twitter, Instagram) widget.

  • Comment System: Implement a fast and effective commenting system (e.g., default WordPress or Disqus).

D. Technical & Backend

  • WordPress CMS Setup: Clean installation of the latest WordPress version on our provided hosting.

  • Premium Theme/Builder: Use a modern, highly-rated, news-focused theme or page builder (e.g., Elementor, Divi, or a custom theme if preferred) that allows for easy content management.

  • SEO Optimization: Install and configure a major SEO plugin (e.g., Rank Math or Yoast) and ensure all templates are structured for on-page SEO (clean HTML, schema markup for articles).

  • Security & Backup: Implementation of essential security and backup plugins (e.g., Wordfence, UpdraftPlus).

  • Ad Placement Zones: Creation of dedicated, configurable widget areas/slots for future ad integration (e.g., for Google AdSense or other ad networks) without breaking the layout.

3. Project Development Instructions & Milestones

The project will follow a structured, milestone-based approach with clear sign-offs at each stage.

Milestone 2 Design & Core Pages * Homepage Design: Fully responsive layout with dynamic content blocks (Top Stories, Live Scores, Latest News). * Core Page Templates: Design and template creation for Single Article, Archive/Category, About Us, and Contact. * Client Review & Approval of the design concepts and core page templates.
Milestone 3 Feature Implementation * Live Score API Integration and display widget configuration. * Player/Team Profile custom post type and template creation. * Setup of the Match Schedules and Results system. * Implementation of ad placement zones.
Milestone 4 Testing, Content, & Launch * Content Upload: Developer to upload 10 sample articles/profiles for testing purposes. * QA Testing: Thorough testing across all major browsers and devices (desktop/mobile) for responsiveness and speed. * Final Optimization: Final caching and performance tweaks. * Handover & Training: Provision of a brief video or document on how to manage the new dynamic sections. * Final Deployment to the live domain.

4. Submission Requirements & Expectations

To be considered for this project, please provide:

  2. Links to 2-3 live WordPress news or magazine websites you have built.

  3. Confirmation of your experience working with sports data APIs.
